Szuper Gallery
are a group of artists who base their work upon colonizing
host institutions through role-playing and subtle duplicity.
They set a competition to design a ‘mobile gallery’,
and Newbetter responded by proposing a ‘trojan horse’ for
the art world. Based upon the archetypal modern art armature
of the ubiquitous and symbolic ‘white wall’,
White Noise consisted of four docile white walls that would
travel, and, upon arrival, would transform into bits of furniture,
exhibition devices, a sales office and a secret door. Like
the mutation of Mogwai to Gremlin in the movie, White Noise
mimicked its artist-client in being tame and subversive in
equal measure. It was an exercise in synthesizing complex
programmatic needs with economic means of space and transport.
