Since we
throw away 2.5million fridges each year, will there be more
fridges soon than there are fish? What are the consequences
of our apocalyptic consumption patterns? At the prize winning
dance school, the Laban in south-east London, Newbetter installed
a series of hand-built, cardboard ‘tables’ whose
forms were derived from the host building. Each table was
adorned with a quotidian scenario exploring cultural, political,
sensational and logistical aspects of recycling fridges in
the UK. During Deptford X week (a bi-annual international
art festival), the table fragments migrated into different
parts of the Laban, and interacted with students, staff and
visitors in shifting ways. Colour coded choreographic ‘steps’ were
drawn onto the building’s floor denoting the ephemeral
positions of the parable tables.
